“BLUE ZONES” are regions of the world where the healthiest people live, identified by Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain in 2000 as áreas where population experiencing exceptionally high longevity. Four “Blue Zones” have been discovered:
- Okinawa (Japan)
- Sardinia (Italy)
- Nicoya (Costa Rica)
- Icaria (Greece)
Visit Nicoya with us to learn the secrets of this region of Costa Rica. Residents here have the lowest rates of middle-age mortality and the second highest concentration of male beyond 100 years of age in the world. Their longevity secret lies partly in their strong faith communities, deep social networks, and habits of regular, low-intensity physical activity.
Program will include Gardening, this will provide the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables for the community, promote physical activity, and support emotional well-being, which can reinforce their healthy behavior, also will make the town more sustainable and livable by investing in outdoor spaces and recreational activities,
This has implications for equity in food action planning considering that people with lower incomes tend to have less access to healthy food options. Princeton Environmental Institute researchers found that, the level of emotional well-being, or happiness, reported while gardening was similar to what people reported while biking, walking, or dining out.
